Trash Polka

    Trash Polka Tattoo in Madrid

Trash Polka originated in Germany, thanks to Simone Pfaff and Volko Merschky. These two came together to create this peculiar style that blends humanity and technology, abstract objects with real…

This style was born thanks to body art. It is characterized by the combination of geometric elements with realistic elements, stains or chaotic compositions with its usual colors which are red and black.

We can highlight several strengths of this tattoo style:

    1. The contrast: as we have been saying, it is very marked by the difference of its zones, that is to say, its contrast between the abstract and the real, the geometric figures and the letters. Above all, the greatest contrast exists in its characteristic red and black colors.
    2. Size: although they are usually large, there are also some that are smaller, but that does not mean that they are less spectacular.
    3. Colors: being like a big collage, but on your body, they will always be made with red and black. With all the possibilities that exist, forming lines, dots, covering empty spaces to give the design the final perspective that is expected.
    4. Lines: they are used to integrate the different elements of the tattoo, they can be of different thickness, length… all the elements found in the tattoo have their function, that is why this style is so peculiar.

    The creators of Trash Polka

In the late 90’s, the creators of Trash Polka came together to make history and leave their mark on the tattoo world.

Simone Pfaff and Volker Merschky united themes of hyperrealism with brushstroke-like decorative graphic elements along with lettering and geometric shapes.

Pfaff and Merschky were graphic designers before becoming tattoo artists. They were lovers of art in all its expressions, music, pointillism, photography. They are known as the tattoo couple that broke all the stereotypes of German tattooing.

At first this style of tattoo was known as Realistic Trash Polka, but its creators decided to eliminate “Realistic” to avoid norms, patterns or rules when it comes to this type of tattoos.

Merschy said, “Trash Polka is the combination of realism and trash, between nature and abstract, between technology and humanity. It is the union between past, present and future. Opposites try to unite in harmony with the body itself”.

    Trash Polka Features

It is characterized by a mixture of techniques in which realism is used for the subject and saturation for the rest.

It is a style that makes an impact since the perfect contrast in colors is obtained. The decorations used in this style vary a lot, since their common characteristics are the letters, geometric shapes… but what differentiates them is the saturation, the filling, that there are no blank spaces.

What several people who have the same Trash Polka style may have in common is the black and red filler.
